1892-S $1 PCGS AU50. While most dates of Morgan dollars were at one point readily available in roll or bag quantity in uncirculated condition, 1892 San Francisco dollars saw extremely high use in commerce, and circulated extensively. Neither the San Francisco Mint dispersals of the 1940s and 1950s, nor the treasury dispersals of the 1960s were known to have included even a single 1892-S dollar. These dispersals of millions of silver dollars included nearly every date in the series. This unusual history renders this date the greatest conditional rarity of the entire Morgan Dollar series. A heavily circulated G04 example may sell for just a few dollars above the value of the silver content of the coin, while MS62 examples regularly sell in excess of $50,000. The example offered displays light circulation, with only the highest points of the coin showing wear. Considerable mint luster is still retained, and surfaces are a silver white color throughout. This piece is an excellent candidate for a high quality registry set of Morgan dollars.
