About the Sacagawea Dollar:
The dawn of the new millennium brought with it the introduction of a novel dollar coin—the Sacagawea dollar. This was the first time in U.S. history that the mint issued a circulating coin that was golden in color yet contained no actual gold. Struck with an outer layer of manganese brass, this unique coin is distinctly different from its contemporary counterparts. A beautiful modern coin, the Sacagawea dollar has an unusually broad border that gives it a certain medallic quality. The obverse depicts a portrait of Sacagawea, the young Shoshone woman who acted as a guide and interpreter for the Lewis and Clark Expedition of 1804-1806. She appears to look over her shoulder at the viewer, with her infant Jean Baptiste Charbonneau upon her back. Little is known about the physical appearance of Sacagawea, so Randy’L Teton, a living member of the Shoshone, provided a human form for this historic figure. The original reverse of the coin depicts an American eagle soaring amidst seventeen stars, symbolic of the number of states at the time of the Lewis and Clark exploration. Since 2009, a different reverse has been featured each year honoring important contributions made by Native Americans to the development of the United States. The obverse was designed by New Mexico artist Glenna Goodacre, who asked that her $5,000 commission be paid in dollar coins. The 2000-P dollars paid to Goodacre were struck on specially burnished blanks to give them a finish unique to that striking. Minted initially for circulation and later for collectors only, the Sacagawea dollar returned to circulation in 2020 for its 20th anniversary.
