1854 $5 NGC AU58. This date is scarcer than its mintage of 160,675 may lead one to believe. 1854 half eagles saw extensive use in commerce- many were melted, destroyed, or otherwise lost to history. Most surviving examples are well circulated, as indicated by David Akers who writes “the 1854, when available at all, is almost always just VF or EF”. The example offered here shows only the earliest signs of circulation. Minimal wear with only minor loss of detail, and plentiful mint luster. The color is a light yellow gold with touches of copper hues. Surfaces are wonderfully original.
