1868 $10 NGC AU55. A date which is easy to underestimate the rarity of! The Philadelphia mint produced less than 11,000 ten dollar gold pieces in 1868. In addition to a remarkably low mintage, many of these coins encountered heavy circulation. David Hall writes that this date is “virtually impossible to obtain in mint state”. The example offered here displays nearly full detail, considerable luster, and attractive color. A scarce coin in any grade, particularly so as an NGC AU55.
