The Royal Canadian Mint has produced this fearsome fossil coin to commemorate the first new tyrannosaur species discovered in Canada in over half a century!
Black Rhodium Plating: Rhodium, an incredibly rare, silvery-white metal, is corrosion resistant. Manually darkened rhodium, referred to as “Black Rhodium” has recently gained popularity within the precious metals and jewelry industries.
Combination of Different Textures and Finishes: The silvery matte-proof finish of the dinosaur’s skull contrasts fiercely with the textured black rhodium background, giving the appearance of a freshly uncovered yet slightly-aged fossil.
Scientifically Verified: The Royal Tyrrell Museum of Paleontology has verified the fossil’s appearance on the coin for scientific accuracy.
The obverse of the coin showcases the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II in a silver matte proof finish against a black rhodium plated background.
The reverse of the coin features a Matte Proof silver fossilized skull of a Thanatotheristes degrootorum (“Reaper of Death”) in front of a black rhodium-plated background, texturized to appear similar to the rocky terrain at an actual dig site.
