Introduced in 1997, the American Platinum Eagle coins are the first and only platinum coins ever produced by the U.S. Mint. American Platinum Eagles are composed of .9995 fine platinum and are offered in 4 denominations containing 1, 1/2, 1/4, or 1/10 ounces of pure platinum. The 1 ounce coin bears a nominal face value of $100, which is the highest face value of any U.S. coin every minted. The obverse of the coins was designed by U.S. Mint chief engraver John Mercanti and depicts the head of the Statue of Liberty, our universal symbol of freedom, gazing confidently forward. The reverse design changes every year. Shown here is the 1997 reverse that was designed by U.S. Mint sculptor Thomas D. Rogers and features a soaring American eagle above a rising sun.
