In 1988, the Royal Canadian Mint issued a new platinum bullion coin to complement its gold and silver offerings, the .9995 fine Canadian Platinum Maple Leaf. At that point, it was the only widely available platinum bullion coin in the world. The Royal Canadian Mint's insistence on using only the finest coin blanks has made the Platinum Maple Leaf the standard against which all other platinum bullion coins are judged. The Platinum Maple Leaf was issued from 1988-1999, 2002, and 2009-present. The coins are currently only produced in 1 ounce denominations bearing a nominal face value of 50 Canadian dollars, but have also been produced in 1/2, 1/4, 1/10, 1/15, and 1/20 ounce sizes. These stunning coins feature a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II of Great Britain on the obverse and the national symbol of Canada, the maple leaf, on the reverse.
