The U.S Mint Introduces the American Liberty 225th Anniversary Silver Medal
In celebration of the establishment of the United States Mint in 1792, the Mint released the anticipated and modernized version of Lady Liberty with the American Liberty 225th Anniversary Silver Medal on June 14, 2017.
Since the 1790s, this image of Liberty has taken on many symbolic female figures. This year, coin designer Justin Kunz created a version personifying the U.S. ideals of freedom and equality first described in our Declaration of Independence. “If we see our self in that and it speaks to us, that’s really powerful and it makes us feel inclusive,” said Kunz.
The obverse (head side) portrays Lady Liberty wearing a crown of stars sculpted b
y Phebe Hemphill. The inscriptions include “LIBERTY”, “1792” and “2017.” On its reverse, designer Chris Costello along with sculpture Michael Gaudioso brings to life an eagle in flight with his eyes on the opportunity to conquer oppression. The sole inscription, “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.”
Produced in Philadelphia, the first Mint in U.S. Mint system, this one-ounce proof medal is struck in 99.9 percent silver, the counterpart to the gold medal introduced earlier this year. Each coin is hand packaged in a fine, black matte presentation case accompanied by its companion booklet describing the birth and progression of our Nation’s symbol.
The U.S. Mint also produces numismatic products such as Congressional Gold Medals, gold bullion coins and proof, uncirculated and commemorative coins like those in the America the Beautiful Quarters® Program. The Mint is a self-sustaining entity and does not operate at the cost of taxpayers.
