October 2017 World Collectors Choice Online Auction Featured At Stack’s Bowers Galleries

Details of the upcoming October 2017 Collector’s Choice Online Auction have been released by Stack’s Bowers Galleries. The auction will feature World and Ancient Coins in addition to World Currency. The live bidding for the Ancient and World Coins commences on Wednesday, October 4, at 8am PST. The bidding for the World Currency will follow seven hours later, at 3pm PST. While bids may be submitted prior to the auction, the Collectors Choice sales will close live with an auction agent.

60 lots of ancient coins will start off the auction, with a vast array of types and designs that will appeal to all specialty collectors. The numerous regions that are represented in the collection consist of Byzantine, Rome, Ionia, Syria, Celtic, Sicilian, Athens, Macedon, and Thrace. An attractive Athenian “New Style” AR Tetradrachm is considered a memorable selection of this particular section.

Following the ancient coins are over 650 lots of world coins, designed to appeal to all types of collectors. Prominent selections of Russia, Germany, France, The Philippines, and Great Britain are featured, along with all manners of Spanish colonial coins, including an extensive Mexican grouping.

A Spanish “Cantonal Revolution” 5 Pesetas is considered one of the auction’s highlights. The Cantonal Revolution started in the southeast region of Cartagena in July of 1873, when the government battalion besieged the city. Six months later, in January 1874, the fledgling revolution conceded. During the course of the siege, the revolutionary government minted coins from requisitioned silver garnered from the local population.

Over 180 lots are featured in the World Currency section, offering a diverse selection sure to appeal to both collectors and dealers. Included in the French selection is an elusive fully original 50 Francs design created by Luc Oliver Merson. This Specimen Proof shows allegorical angels at both the front of the note and at its center. While this Specimen Proof contains no watermarks, serial numbers, signatures, or dates, it is considered conservatively graded due to its fantastic centering. This rare offering is the first of such offered by Stack’s Bowers.
